Papaw Dew's Deer Camp

My dad's back yard has become a deer camp. Now we are making it cool.

Panorama view of deer camp, left to right: end of my tiny house, another member's camper, my dad's backyard and house, the outdoor shower, clothesline, man cave shed, turn around drive, the end of my tiny house.

When I first moved my tiny house here, and my dad rolled out an extension cord for me, my uncle made fun of me for not being 100% solar.

I submit to you the reason I'm not 100% solar. The parts in this picture that are in full sun right now are only in full sun a short slice of the day. The whole property is like that.

I tried charging from solar one time. I had to move the panel around so much it was like minding a baby.

Some moss on twiggy ground.

Some moss on twiggy, leafy ground.

Apropos nothing, some of the moss that grows under the trees at the fence line.

Along a barbed wire fence, an ad hoc rack made of a ladder from an above ground pool along with some scrap lumber and iron; on the rack are lots of long bamboo poles, curing.

My dad mentioned that I probably want to move my bamboo poles out of the sunny spot on the lumber rack. He says with too much sun, they can split. Not only do they become useless, but insects move in.

A heavy duty folding camp chair whose seat has been replaced with a sling of netted cord.

One thing we really believe in out here is repairing things that still have use in them. Or even repurposing. Sometimes we get hilarious results. Sometimes we have to try a few times.

A pot with macaroni, slices of summer squash, field peas, and fragments of sausage in a reddish sauce.

One pot meals are the ticket here. Featured is a pot of whole wheat macaroni along with summer squash and field peas from my uncle's garden. There's also summer sausage that has been peeled and diced. The sauce is based on tomato soup. This went over rather well.

Night view of screen tent with camo net over it, lighted from within, with various cabinets and appliances inside.

I'm probably prejudiced but I think this place is cute as hell at night.

Interior view of a screen tent where the zippered door is open and covered by a portion of mosquito net; both the screen tent wall and the mosquito net are billowing in the wind; a camp chair is in the foreground, and a painted piece of plywood is covering up mud in the doorway.

It's another hot day, but it's not oppressive. The humidity is a bit lower, but the big factor is wind. There is a beautiful wind coming alternately from the south and the east that is cool and refreshing. We don't even have fans running today.

An exterior view of a screen tent with camo net all over it, where the door flap is tied open; inside the tent are various appliances and cabinets and tables; a filthy white Yeti cooler sits outside.

The outdoor kitchen is coming along slowly.

View through a screen tent and a barbed wire fence at a pasture with horses in the distance; one horse is lying down and one is standing up.

One relaxing activity is to sit in the screen tent enjoying the breeze and watching the horses in the pasture.
